Wizards general manager Will Dawkins offered an update Sunday on the health of Anthony Davis, saying he expects the star forward to return this season, though a clearer timeline will be available after the All-Star break.

Davis, a 10-time All-Star, has been sidelined since Jan. 8 with a sprained finger on his non-shooting hand. He was acquired by Washington from the Dallas Mavericks as part of an eight-player trade ahead of Thursday’s deadline, with an initial return projection of roughly six weeks. Reports from The Athletic had suggested the team might shut him down for the season, but Dawkins indicated that isn’t currently the plan.

“The plan for AD right now is to go back to Dallas and finish his rehab,” Dawkins said. “During All-Star break, he takes another visit for a doctor. And that’s a big appointment for us to kind of see where his progress is at.”

The Wizards, who entered Sunday’s game against the Miami Heat with a 14-37 record and second-to-last in the Eastern Conference, have been reshaping their roster for the future. In January, Washington also acquired four-time All-Star Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks, though Young has been sidelined with a sprained knee. Dawkins said Young will also be reassessed during the All-Star break and is showing positive progress in workouts and limited on-court drills.

Despite the major additions, the Wizards have maintained much of their young core, including second-year forward Alex Sarr and rookie guard Tre Johnson, signaling a blend of immediate talent and long-term development as they look ahead to next season.
