Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 24 points and Jalen Johnson delivered a well-rounded performance with 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Golden State Warriors 124-111 on Sunday night.
Luke Kennard provided a big lift off the bench, scoring a season-high 22 points and knocking down six 3-pointers to help Atlanta secure its third straight victory.
Stephen Curry led Golden State with 31 points for his 13th 30-point game of the season, while Jimmy Butler added 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Despite the star efforts, the Warriors saw their three-game home winning streak come to an end. Golden State is now 0-2 this season when Curry and Butler both score 30 or more, including a loss at Orlando on Nov. 18.
Atlanta seized control late in the first half when Alexander-Walker scored eight consecutive points in the final 1:14, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers. The Hawks went into halftime leading 59-53 after also getting a buzzer-beating jumper from CJ McCollum.
Dyson Daniels’ layup midway through the third quarter pushed Atlanta’s lead to 70-58, and although Golden State responded with a 10-0 run, the Warriors were unable to sustain the momentum. The Hawks pulled away again down the stretch.
Golden State opened the game hot, making five of its first six shots to build a 14-4 lead, with Curry scoring seven of those points. The Warriors cooled off from long range, however, shooting just 5 of 19 from 3-point distance by halftime.
Butler had 17 points, five assists and four rebounds in the first half, marking his third time in the last four games scoring at least 20 points.
Curry also reached a milestone, as he and his father, Dell, moved into second place on the NBA’s all-time list for points scored by a father-son duo, passing Joe and Kobe Bryant. Only LeBron and Bronny James rank higher.
The Hawks continue their four-game road trip at the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night. The Warriors remain home to host Portland on Tuesday night.
