Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are continuing to stockpile experience at quarterback, bringing back Carson Wentz on a one-year deal.

The move comes shortly after Minnesota added Kyler Murray, setting up a crowded and competitive quarterback room that also includes J.J. McCarthy. After instability at the position derailed their 2025 season, the Vikings are clearly prioritizing depth and insurance heading into the new year.

Wentz proved to be a valuable option last season when he stepped in for McCarthy, starting five games in Kevin O'Connell’s system. He performed efficiently for stretches, completing over 65% of his passes for 1,216 yards with six touchdowns. However, a dislocated shoulder ultimately cut his season short and limited his effectiveness down the stretch.

Minnesota’s approach reflects lessons learned from last year, when injuries forced the team to dig deep into its depth chart — even turning to an undrafted rookie in key moments. That instability contributed heavily to a disappointing campaign.

O’Connell has consistently cycled through multiple quarterbacks during his tenure, and this offseason appears to be no different. By pairing Wentz with Murray and McCarthy, the Vikings are creating both competition and contingency plans at the game’s most important position.

Beyond depth, Wentz’s familiarity with the system gives Minnesota added stability. As Murray adjusts to a new offense and McCarthy continues his development, having a veteran who already understands the scheme could prove valuable over the course of a long season.

After failing to retain previous options like Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones last year, the Vikings are taking a different approach — loading up on experienced quarterbacks in hopes of avoiding a repeat scenario.
