The New York Jets are adding a proven playmaker to their secondary, agreeing to acquire safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Monday.

Miami will receive a 2026 seventh-round pick in return, and Fitzpatrick is set to sign a three-year, $40 million deal with New York once the trade becomes official at the start of the new league year on Wednesday.

Fitzpatrick, 29, spent the 2025 season in Miami after six years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He reunites with Jets defensive coordinator Brian Duker, who coached him in Miami last season.

The Jets were in urgent need of help at safety. While Malachi Moore provides a young building block, the departures of Andre Cisco and Tony Adams in free agency left a glaring hole. New York also finished the 2025 season without recording a single interception, highlighting the need for a playmaker in the secondary. Fitzpatrick, a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro, has 21 career interceptions, though he recorded just one pick last season and two over the past 42 games.

Originally a 2018 first-round pick by the Dolphins, Fitzpatrick spent one year in Miami before being traded to Pittsburgh, where he became one of the league’s premier safeties. Now back in the AFC East, he gives the Jets a proven veteran presence in the secondary.
