The New York Jets are parting ways with offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand after just one season, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday. The move comes roughly a month after the Jets dismissed defensive coordinator Steve Wilks late in the 2025 campaign.

According to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, head coach Aaron Glenn and Engstrand had multiple discussions about Engstrand’s role moving forward before mutually deciding to separate. Glenn is preparing for his second season at the helm after being hired last January.

Engstrand, 43, was brought to New York from Detroit last offseason, where Glenn served as defensive coordinator and Engstrand worked as the Lions’ passing game coordinator under Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson. But in his first year calling plays at the NFL level, Engstrand was unable to replicate Detroit’s offensive success.

The Jets showed early promise, scoring 32 points and totaling 394 yards in a Week 1 shootout loss to Pittsburgh with Justin Fields at quarterback. The offense quickly tailed off, however, as Fields struggled with efficiency and injuries limited both Tyrod Taylor and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. New York’s passing game never recovered.

The Jets finished 29th in the NFL in points scored, total yards and first downs, and ranked last in passing yards with just 2,385.

Engstrand’s departure completes a full coordinator reset for Glenn, who emphasized culture change upon his arrival. Now, after a 3-14 season, the Jets will be searching for both a new offensive and defensive coordinator heading into a critical offseason.

Fixing the offense will be a central task for the next play-caller. Fields and Dalvin Cook are under contract for 2026, but the Jets are expected to pursue quarterback upgrades, whether through free agency or the trade market. Holding the No. 2 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft — and with limited elite quarterback options available — New York may need to be creative.

While Wilson and Breece Hall remain core pieces and the starting offensive line stayed intact for all 17 games last season, depth and consistency across the roster remain concerns.

Owners of the longest playoff drought in major American sports, the Jets have not fielded a top-20 offense since 2015. Glenn’s next coordinator hire could prove pivotal in determining whether that streak finally ends.
