The Detroit Lions are headed overseas in 2026.
Detroit will play a regular-season game in Munich, Germany, marking the first time in franchise history the club will host a game in the country. The matchup will be staged at Allianz Arena, home of FC Bayern Munich, and will be the Lions’ first international appearance in more than a decade.
The Lions’ opponent, along with the game date and kickoff time, will be announced when the full NFL schedule is released this spring.
“We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season,” team president and CEO Rod Wood said in a statement. “As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”
Detroit’s most recent international contest came on Nov. 1, 2015, when it faced the Kansas City Chiefs at Wembley Stadium in London. The year prior, the Lions defeated the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley as the designated home team.
The 2026 game will carry added significance for wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, whose mother, Miriam, is from Cologne. St. Brown has long expressed a desire to play in Germany, a country he frequently visited growing up.
“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother's home country of Germany since coming to the league,” St. Brown said. “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I've gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country.”
St. Brown and the Lions have hosted youth football camps throughout Germany in recent years as part of the NFL’s global expansion efforts. Detroit also holds marketing rights in the DACH region — Germany, Austria and Switzerland — and has worked to grow its fan base there.
Now, the franchise will get the chance to showcase Detroit football on an international stage in Munich.
