Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers is exploring a surprising jump from unretirement to a head coaching opportunity. The Buffalo Bills are set to interview Rivers for their head coaching vacancy on Friday, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Interestingly, Bills quarterback Josh Allen will be present for the interviews, highlighting the team’s emphasis on quarterback-coach chemistry in the hiring process.
Rivers, 42, spent five years out of the league before briefly returning in 2025 to quarterback the Indianapolis Colts for three starts as Indianapolis pushed for a playoff spot. Following the season, he acknowledged that coaching could be in his future, but he initially insisted it wasn’t part of his 2026 plans, saying he intended to return to St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama to support his son Gunner’s senior football season.
Despite that earlier stance, Rivers now appears open to making the leap directly into an NFL head coaching role, skipping the typical path of positional or coordinator experience.
