One-time Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith is on the move again. The Pittsburgh Steelers have informed Smith that he will be released after one season with the team, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported. The move will save Pittsburgh approximately $7 million against the salary cap.
The 30-year-old was traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Steelers last offseason and had one year remaining on his contract. Smith has played for four teams over the past four seasons: the Patriots, Atlanta Falcons with four years on the Tennessee Titans and earned his lone Pro Bowl selection in 2024 with Miami, posting career highs of 88 receptions, 884 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns.
A crowded tight end room in Pittsburgh — featuring Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington — limited Smith’s production last season. He finished with 38 catches for 222 yards and two touchdowns, while Freiermuth and Washington are both under contract for 2026.
Smith now enters free agency, joining a group of notable tight ends including Cade Otton and Isaiah Likely.
